The FAB classification system is based on 4 main factors:  The percentage of blast cells in the bone marrow. Blasts are the youngest or most immature white blood cells. In normal bone marrow, no more than 5 out of 100 white cells are blasts.   The percentage of peripheral blood blasts. This is the percentage of blasts in the blood that is circulating in the body.
