If bacteria or germs get into the catheter, they can go to the bladder or kidneys. This is called a catheter associated urinary tract infection or a “CA-UTI.” Patients and healthcare providers should be extra careful to prevent catheter associated urinary tract infections. Preventing an infection is always better than treating it.
