Some countries perform a screen for cystic fibrosis as part of the newborn screening testing. After a baby is born, the nurse draws a little blood from the baby by poking the heel. The blood is then placed on spots on a card and analyzed for a few genetic conditions. The results can take up to 4 weeks to come back.
