Combination pills contain the hormones estrogen and progestin. These pills are regular birth control pills taken in higher-than-usual amounts. Combination pills also work by preventing ovulation. They should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. These pills may still be effective within 5 days of unprotected sex.
