If the health care provider sees abnormal tissue, they will take a sample for examination under the microscope. This is called a biopsy. Biopsy is helpful in determining whether abnormal growths are cancerous. It can also help determine if bacteria causing an ulcer is present. The biopsy results are usually available a few days later.
