A trach collar, with oxygen or without oxygen, may be placed over the trach to keep the air moist. Moistened air helps to prevent secretions from becoming thick and causing blockages in the lungs and the tracheostomy tube. Thick secretion blockages in the trach tube make it difficult to breathe.
