The patient is suctioned as much as needed to remove secretions from the mouth and lungs. A special rigid tube, called a Yankauer or tonsil tip, may be used to remove secretions from the mouth, back of the throat, and nose. A suction catheter is used to suction secretions from the endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube and lungs.
