Sometimes a mastectomy may be done even if a woman does not have breast cancer. The surgery removes both breasts to reduce the risk of breast cancer. This is called a prophylactic, preventative or risk-reducing mastectomy. It may only be done in women who have a very high risk of breast cancer.
