Suctioning is a way to remove the secretions from the trach tube. It keeps the airway open. A small catheter that is connected to a suction machine is placed into the tracheostomy tube to remove the secretions from the trach tube and lungs. It can be an uncomfortable and scary experience for the person. It will produce a cough.
